Adolescent gynaecology is increasingly recognized as an area in which specific knowledge and expertise is required to ensure that patients achieve the best outcome. Gynaecological problems in adolescents encountered may include:
- Delayed puberty
- Amenorrhoea [absent periods]
- Menorrhagia [heavy periods]
- Dysmenorrhoea [painful periods] or
- Oligomenorrhea [infrequent or no periods]
- Premenstrual syndrome
- Ovarian tumors
Although serious pathology is rare, distress and discomfort can be significant. An awareness of the problems that are unique to paediatric and adolescent gynecology is invaluable for proper management of the young patients. Particular care is essential in addressing gynaecological concerns in this age group as it may induce physical and emotional trauma.
